The summer had been great, spending all day at the beach and all night at a party or at a friend's house. Laur had rarely set for in her house, which was exactly the way she liked it. But since school had started, Lauren had been swamped with work and had no other choice but to stay home. Already it was Saturday and she was STILL stranded in the Barry residence. Staying home with Lucinda every day was starting to get to her, she realized as she poured a glass of tomato juice, which she ended up dumping into the sink. Quickly, she went up to her room and checked to see that all of her work was done. Then she told her dad, who was sitting in the living room for a change, instead of being at work, that she was going for a walk.
Once outside, Laur sat on the front steps. She rested her elbows on her knees and then her chin on her fists. She considered calling Nicole, but she was probably out with Joey. The thought of Nicole made her sigh. There wasn't a single girl in the world that knew and understood Laur like Nic did. And she was being replaced by a boy. Maybe... She'd text Max and ask him to meet her at the beach. Nah, she didn't want to bother him. Lauren inhaled deeply. It was a beautiful afternoon, and Laur hated spending it alone. Finally, after deciding she had no one to ask, she picked up her phone and asked Maximino. Then she ran into the house to change.
The beach was perfect. Whether Max came or not would not affect her day, though if he did decide to join her, it would only make things better. He was one of her close friends, even if Nicole didn't approve. Laur dropped her bag beside the life guard stand and looked up at the chubby man on top of it, then giggled. It was clear he took his job very seriously and had for a long time, from the looks of the wrinkles on his face. Laur pulled her towel out of her striped beach bag and put it down. Slightly self concious, she pulled of her tank top and wiggled out of her shorts. She twisted her blonde hair into a sloppy bun, before laying on her stomach to tan and wait.
