eyes and haphazardly pushed the covers off herself as the alarm beside her began to bleat over and over again until she finally slapped the snooze button. tragic as it was she had only gotten about six hours of sleep last night, she couldn't allow herself anymore. today was the deadline for her rent and if she didn't turn it in to her landlord in the next twenty minutes, eviction would be right around the corner. luckily, she had just received a big, fat check from her boss for a script she had just finished, meaning for once in many months, she could be a good tenant and pay on time. hallelujah. avery yawned widely, then lifted herself out of bed and in the general direction of her closet. without putting to much thought into it, she drew out a few things and then slipped them on before grabbing the white envelope that lay on her dresser. inside was the check and she stuck it into her purse, which was one out of the two she owned. if her mother found out she only had two purses, she would be dubbed even more a failure of a female than she already was. having an ex-model for a mother made life difficult when you were one of the fashionably-challenged. yawning again, she opened her bedroom door and edged towards the bathroom, quickly scrubbing her face and brushing her teeth. maneuvering through her apartment was no easy task, and it took a good ten minutes until she could find her keys and edgar, her kitten who was really like a dog in cat form. in a quick motion, she grabbed her keys and stuck edgar into her bag, his small face peeking out curiously as he sat on top of the clutter inside her purse. avery considered feeding him, but decided against it. he already at twice his entire weight daily, he could handle waiting a little longer.avery rubbed her
after struggling to close her front door, she walked down the hallway and pounded on the last door on the right, which was where mr. chang, her landlord, lived. she could hear remnants of some game show turned up way too high coming from inside and had to pound about seven times until she finally heard him unlocking the door. he was a squat, balding, asian man who was fairly short-tempered and completely denied he was losing his hearing. he finished mumbling something to his wife in what avery guessed was chinese, and then turned to her, holding out his hand and narrowing his eyes at her. she quickly fished out the enveloped and placed it in his palm, and then waved a quick goodbye. he stared at her a few moments before slamming the door shut. avery laughed and then made her way down the stairs, out the door, and onto the sidewalk. edgar, being the dog-like cat he was, enjoyed going on walks or simply playing around outside. she had to take him to the local parks, however, since she had no backyard of her own he could wander around in and do what he pleased. she reached inside her bag and pulled him out, also finding his leash, which was fuchsia and oh-so-manly. she quickly fastened it around onto his collar and then set him on the ground. once she began to walk, avery began to get the usual odd stares. it wasn't typical for you to see someone walking their cats, but at the same time, it wasn't completely uncommon. she always liked it best when little kids noticed because they all jumped at the chance to pet edgar, which he reacted to with a lot of purring and licking. for a small kitten, he had a big personality.
she found herself having to pull edgar along as he tried to sniff at every person who came along. as they got closer to the park, it tended to get crowded, and she usually had to pick him up, which he hated. reaching down, she grabbed him and he bared his tiny fangs at her. avery rolled her eyes at his attempts at being scary and then pushed her way through the crowds of people. edgar continued to watch from her arms, and avery focused on getting through in one piece. she had grown up in los angeles, which had taught her enough about the city to know how it worked. a couple of businessmen scurried beside her with coffee in hand and nearly spilled it on her. they continued on without even apologizing. typical. avery turned the corner and then walked a few more paces until she reached the park. it was filled with lazy looking people and their pets, as well as a few joggers and lost looking tourists looking for a little peace. rubbing edgar behind his ears, she set him down and firmly grasped the handle of his leash. she knew enough not to let go of it because it would mean at least an hour of her chasing him around the park and a big mess. his short fur stuck up in different directions and he immediately began pulling the leash in all directions as he tried to decide where he wanted to go. avery followed him, eyes focused on nothing in particular as she went along. however, something did catch her eye as edgar slowed down and gnawed curiously at a leaf. it was someone sitting on a bench wearing a white hat speckled with colors over his dark hair. brian. her heart gave a few extra-loud thumps and she let a wide smile creep onto her face. she had always had feelings for brian that were, well, more than those of a friend, and she was certain they would never lead anywhere. she knew she just wasn't his type. she wasn't stunning, charming, or flirtatious, but being around him still made her ecstatic and a girl could still hope. slowly, she crept towards him and in a fluid motion slid next to him on the bench.[/blockquote][/blockquote]
