in this life, one thing counts.

The only reason Ana came into the dance studio early was because she had math that morning. And she pretty much promised herself that she was dyslexic with numbers. Then again, she promised herself that she was dyslexic with most things apart from dance, English and Russian. But whatever, she didn’t really care, she'd always wanted to be a dancer and passing her math exam wasn’t going to ensure that route in life but practicing ballet, well, was. like she cared how you found the hypotenuse of a triangle... now she thought of it, she didn’t even know what the hypotenuse was. Yet again, she didn't care, especially not now because one, she was so far behind she didn't even care about trying to catch up anymore and two, dance class was in five minutes.
When Ana came to Phoenix only a week or so ago she was in a completely focused state of mind. She was only here for the dancing, nothing else mattered. "All you have to do is dance your heart out. Then you can move on." she told herself firmly when she arrived. But this AIM system, something they didn’t have in Russia, had helped her, well, make a few contacts. She didn't use the term friend because she'd only ever been let down by 'friend's and letting someone down isn’t what she thought friends did. Obviously, she was wrong. Sure, the nearest thing she had to a friend here was probably Geoff. But he was a senior and more like a big brother. He was the one who told be to eat, he looked after me when i needed help. A flip in her stomach told her that she wanted more of these, though Ana fought back the feeling and told herself that getting attached was no good. "Besides, he's leaving next year and then what? You’ve been let down again." she shook her head in thought.
Bringing herself back to her dancing she realized that her mind had wondered. Kicking herself mentally she noticed that if these thought-processes when on much longer, they'd take her mind off her dancing, and Jesus, she couldn’t have that. Ana snapped her mind back to what she was doing just as the door opened. She landed, more quickly than she usually might have done, as the new arrival, Ryder, began to clap. She raised one of her eyebrows at him as though daring him to carry on. She wasn’t one for sarcastic appreciation and she wasn’t scared to keep her promise and throw ballet shoes at his head. But, she was lenient, and she didn’t have the time and he's already begun talking.
"freshman can dance." she rolled her eyes obviously. of course she could dance, what was he expecting, a bloody elephant. Being European and Asian junior champion did suggest that she was at least a decent dancer. "but could you at least come in at the same time as everybody else does." She opened her mouth to shoot an answer at him but didn’t have time as he came straight in with his next sentence "let me guess your last class was a bit too hard for you." her lips pursed and then, with extreme effort she forced them into a sarcastic smile. "well i did have math." she crossed her arms as he traveled towards the changing room and didn’t take her eyes off him until he was on the other side of the door.
as he started to stretch Ana started to practice one hundred and eight degree arabesques and his speaking didn't relieve her of her focus. "where is this teacher anyway. She or he should be here by now." Ana didn't move for a few moments before lowering her leg and transferring onto the other before saying "its a she and yes, she should. But its still two minutes until the start of class?" she said this as more of a question as though offering him a solution.
