It's a big, bright, beautiful world...
At least it was a nice day. The sun was out and made it such a pleasantry to be outdoors. The sky was a pale blue, large white cotton candy like clouds floated aimlessly, meandering along with the ocean breeze that made its way off of the ocean. A few birds chirped and made their way about, doing whatever birds do. Squirrels chattered at each other in the trees, skittering here and there to mind their own business. The park was very devoid of people today. Those that were sensible were probably making use of such a beautiful day, going to the beach or having a picnic with the people they usually associated with. Whatever the reason, it kept the park quiet at this afternoon hour. My shoes scuffed the pavement as I dragged my size eight, black and white checkered, high top vans. My thumbs were tucked into the back pockets of my straight leg jeans and my brown eyes were focused on the ground. It had been a few months since my parents and I had moved out here to Hilo and I was starting to get very restless.
The city life that I had been raised in was so much more exciting than this little uneventful town. Sure it was Hawaii, one of the most beautiful places in the world. The weather was beautiful almost constantly and the beach was less than twenty minutes away if you ever wanted to take a break from life. But it seems that life had stopped in this small little city. I missed the exhaust fumes and noisy cars. The police sirens in the distance and angry taxi drivers yelling out their windows. The way people brushed you off if you accidentally ran into them. Too many people that were coming and going to actually get to know them. Here, it seemed like I saw the same old people around school even if I did not know exact names to put to faces. I made no effort and did not intend to. In class people could pinpoint my place of origin as the Big Apple and I was automatically labeled as abrasive and tunnel minded. Though it was slightly true, I wasn't about to live up to the stereotype by confirming any suspicions. I stayed to myself and wanted it to stay that way.
Coming up to a park bench, I sat down with a flop. Folding my arms to my chest, I assumed a laying position on the bench and observed the clouds. They continued to drift at a lazy rate, transforming before my eyes into discernible shapes and forms. "Oh, it looks like a dragon.." My voice was quiet and quite lethargic as I shifted my position and followed the cloud with my eyes. The warmth of the sun fell flush on my cheeks and warmed them comfortably, the breeze lifting any humidity from my skin. It really was a beautiful day outside.
Before I knew it, my consciousness started to drift in and out of awareness, my eyes giving in to the whims of my body. Despite the lack of excitement of the quaint little town, it was definitely peaceful and relaxing.
